ABOUT

Aaron Lister is Senior Curator (Toi) at City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi in Aotearoa New Zealand. He was previously Exhibitions Curator at the National Library of New Zealand, a lecturer in the Art History departments of Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Otago, and has worked as an independent curator and writer. He is a Trustee of CIRCUIT Artist Moving Image Aotearoa New Zealand, and is one half of Curator of Screams, a collaborative project with Dr Chelsea Nichols exploring the tethering of contemporary art and horror films.

Lister has a sustained interest in the psychic, symbolic, and affective dimensions of contemporary art. His work frequently explores how artists engage with states of uncertainty—spiritual, psychological, political, and cultural—and how images operate at the threshold between meaning and ambiguity. His practice is attuned to the uncanny, the esoteric, and the speculative dimensions of contemporary art, particularly its intersections with mysticism, occult traditions, horror cinema, science fiction, and countercultural histories.
